Why we Exist
Almost every week, the local coroner will deal with at least one suicide in this area. Someone's son or daughter, father, mother, partner. Often a little help at the right time would have stopped the terrible slide into depression.
You'll have seen on the testimonials page how important our counsellors have been in the lives of those who seek their help: children not taken into care; marriages not smashed by internal tension; lives saved because the person realised they are normal and not crazy!
The Cost to the Individual
- 1 in 6 experiencing mental illness at this moment
- Accounts for 1/3 of all disability
- Breaks up families
- Lost jobs
- People are out of work longer if they don't get help
- Risk of suicide
The Cost to Business and the Community
Recently the London School of Economics (LSE) published the results of a lengthy study into the impact of depression anxiety and stress on the economy and the effect they have on the lives of people affected. They found that
- Lost production (£12 bn annually)
- Costs us as taxpayers £7 bn
- Less well—off people cannot afford to get help even though half at least could recover
- "We are not talking about the 'worried well'. We are talking about people whose lives are crippled by their stress" — LSE and we know that
- Anyone can be affected — but it's worse if you're on a low income.
Where Chiltern Counselling Fits in
Chiltern Counselling can, for a very small investment of money and time help a person affected by depression, anxiety or stress to regain control of their lives instead of becoming a long—term statistic. We have clients who can't afford their own treatment costs but we also have clients who can't pay us what our service costs to provide.
No business, even a charity, can afford to make a loss — it would soon be bankrupt and unable to help anyone.
But for the little that our services cost we can make a huge difference to people's lives as the testimonials demonstrate
